Towel Ring Height and Other Fixtures: Proper Measurements

If you are doing any remodeling in your bathroom, one of the first things that get replaced is your fixtures. Changing these out every few years is a quick and easy way to update your space. While many people may just automatically hang their new fixtures in the same place as their old ones, others wonder exactly what the right towel ring height should be. How can you better organize all of the fixtures in your bathroom so that everything is at a convenient level?

Standardizing your towel bar and hand towel ring height can make your bathroom design slightly more cohesive. For more information on the proper heights for your fixtures, take a look at some of these guidelines below.

Towel Ring Height

Most bathroom design experts agree on one practical height for your hand towel ring. Your hand towel ring should measure between 50 and 52 inches from the floor. If your bathroom is geared more towards children, then you might want to consider lowering the bar for them a bit. Unless you plan to have them use a step stool, you can lower the hand towel ring to roughly 36 inches until they are tall enough to reach higher.

If you are measuring from your vanity, the standard towel ring height above the sink is roughly 20 inches from the countertop. If you have multiple hooks or hand towels, each one should be about 9 inches apart from the others.

When you are measuring for your hand towel holders, you need to know what style holder you are going to use before you start drilling holes in the wall. If you plan to use a traditional ring style, it should measure 52 inches from the floor to the top of the ring. Alternatively, it could measure 20 to 22 inches from the bottom of the ring to the top of your vanity.

Towel Bars and Robe Hooks

Once you know the towel ring height from the floor, the rest of your accessories and fixtures can easily fall into place. It is good to keep things level in the bathroom, so you should also measure your towel bars at the same level. They should range from 42 to 48 inches off the floor. Keep in mind that towel bars should be at least 42 inches off the floor, but hooks should be a minimum of 65 inches above the floor.

Towel bars should be located anywhere 14 to 18 inches above the vanity countertop.

If you have a towel bar that also has a shelf above it, the bar itself should measure roughly 48 inches above the floor.

Toilet Paper Height

In addition to hanging your towels at the appropriate height, many people struggle with conveniently placing their toilet paper roll holder. You want it to be close to the front rim of the toilet, but not too close. It should also be at the appropriate level so that you can easily pull from the roll when necessary.

This is one of those areas where a little bit of guidance is often necessary. If you drill holes into the wall prematurely without planning, then you might cause avoidable damage. Getting too ahead of yourself with installing fixtures as this one can definitely damage the finish that you just updated in your new bathroom.

The standard height for a toilet paper holder is 26 inches off the ground. In addition to this, it is also roughly eight to twelve inches in front of the rim of your toilet. In some spaces, it may be difficult to make this number work. There is often too little space in front of the toilet to put the holder this far away. If that is the case, then you can bring it a little closer if necessary.

Hanging New Fixtures

Hanging new fixtures in your bathroom is a quick and easy way to freshen up your space. It requires little investment and can easily be done on your own at home without the aid of a professional. If you have a drill and a little bit of handiness, you can definitely accomplish these tasks. Now that you know the standard heights, you can get to work!
